About Tbilisi State Medical University

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) is a medical university located in Tbilisi, Georgia. It was established in 1918 and has a rich history spanning over a century. TSMU has evolved to become one of the most significant universities in Georgia and Eastern Europe.

Additionally, TSMU is the only university in Georgia with 6 university clinics. The university also has a dedicated Clinical Skills and Multidisciplinary Simulation Center, where students get to practise their skills in a controlled and safe environment

TSMU has trained more than 40,000 doctors, many of whom have successful careers throughout Europe, the USA, Asia, and more. Currently, the university has over 50 registered doctors in the UK. About 10,500 students are currently enrolled at this prestigious university, around 25% of whom are international students.

Tbilisi State Medical University doesn’t offer a graduate-entry pathway into Medicine or Dentistry but accepts student transfers.

Courses Offered at Tbilisi State Medical University

TSMU offers 3 different courses and degrees in English: Doctor of Medicine (MD), American MD (USMD), and Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM).

The Doctor of Medicine Courses

The MD and USMD courses both last 6 years and give 360 ECTS credits. This includes 1 year of internship.

The courses follow the following structure:

  • Extensive practical training: teaching in clinical settings is a core part of the curriculum. Practical and clinical skills are developed through the use of advanced simulation technology and supervised patient interactions at the university clinics
  • Participation in discussions and debates, where students analyse, reason, and provide justifications for their statements
  • Students additionally have opportunities to participate in scientific research and international collaborations

The Doctor of Dental Medicine Course

The DDM course lasts for 5 years and gives 300 ECTS credits. The curriculum is meticulously structured, incorporating biomedical, behavioural, social, and clinical sciences, ensuring a holistic educational experience in dental medicine.

During this course, students are taught via the following teaching methods:

  • Case-based learning focusing on clinical skills and reasoning.

The university uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), which prioritises positive learning outcomes and is geared towards student-centred education.

The academic year starts at the beginning of October, and the first semester lasts until the end of January, followed by a 1-month examination period.
