About the Medical University of Lodz, Poland

The Medical University of Lodz (MUL) is one of the best Polish medical universities and is currently the largest public medical school in Poland. MUL was founded at the beginning of October 2002 as a direct descendant of the Medical Academy and the Military Medical Academy of Lodz, which were established in 1950 and 1958 respectively.

The Lodz Medical University has well-established medicine and dentistry programmes in English that were introduced over 20 years ago. Currently, more than 800 international students from over 70 countries study at the Medical University of Lodz. There are over 1,200 successful doctors and dentists that have graduated from MUL who have found success in a variety of medical fields across the world.

MUL doesn’t offer a graduate entry path into medicine or dentistry, but accepts student transfers. The university uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) to ensure easy transfer of credits and students between European universities.

Courses offered at the Medical University of Lodz

The Medical University of Lodz offers a pre-medicine course, a 6-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme and a 5-year Doctor of Dental Medicine (DND) course.

About the Pre-Medicine Programme in English at the Medical University of Lodz

The Medical University of Lodz English Division offers a comprehensive preparatory course for high-school graduates. The purpose of this programme is to thoroughly prepare prospective students for the entrance exam and for entering the world of medicine or dentistry. Whether you need to study the prerequisite subjects or polish up your knowledge, the premedical programme can significantly boost your chances of getting accepted into the medicine or dentistry programmes in English at the Medical University of Lodz.

The preparatory course consists of 960 academic hours of studying (1 academic hour = 45 minutes), which includes:

  • Biology, lectures and laboratories – 160 hours
  • Chemistry, lectures and laboratories – 160 hours
  • Physics, lectures and laboratories – 128 hours
  • Medical English lectures – 280 hours
  • Polish language lectures – 140 hours
  • Anatomy lectures – 30 hours
  • Introduction to academic professionalism, social competencies and learning skills – 50 hours
  • Basic Life Support classes – 12 hours

No entrance exam is required for pre-med.

About the Medicine Course in English at the Medical University of Lodz

The Medical University of Lodz medicine programme lasts for 6 years, for a total of 12 semesters. It is designed to provide comprehensive medical education that complies with international teaching standards. 

In this programme, students will build a strong theoretical foundation, while also gaining the practical skills necessary to achieve success as a doctor on a global scale. 

In the first 3 years, students at MUL will learn about the Basic Sciences, including microbiology, pharmacology, biophysics, physiology, pathomorphology, histology and cell biology, biology, medical chemistry, anatomy, and other related subjects.

The latter 3 years are dedicated to Clinical Sciences, which includes psychiatry, radiology, family medicine, neurology, oncology & palliative care, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, infectious diseases, internal medicine, paediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and other specialities.

About the Medical University of Lodz Dentistry Programme in English

The dentistry course in English at the Medical University of Lodz is 5-years long, for a total of 10 semesters. Students enrolled in the DND programme will receive a thorough education that complies with the strict regulations and standards of the European Union. 

The course is divided into 3 main sections:

  • Basic Sciences and preclinical courses in the first 2 years - biophysics, physiology, anatomy, medical chemistry, histology, cell biology, biology, and other subjects
  • Paraclinical courses from the 2nd year forward, including medical psychology, microbiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and pathomorphology
  • Clinical courses in the final years, which include prosthetics, orthodontics, conservative dentistry, implantology, periodontology, endodontics, paediatric dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and others.

The admission period is usually between mid-February and late September every year.

The Medical University of Lodz admission requirements for the medicine and dentistry programmes include a high school diploma or a secondary school leaving certificate. You will need above-average grades in 2 of these subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Maths.

There’s also an entrance exam in the form of an interview, which will include the following:

  • General questions about socio-medical subjects to assess your motivation to study medicine or dentistry, your interpersonal skills, and your potential for professional behaviour.
  • Questions to verify your knowledge in 2 out of these 4 subjects - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (4 questions each). This includes descriptive and multiple-choice questions.
  • An evaluation of your English proficiency.

The admission requirements for the pre-medicine course ask for a high-school diploma or equal GCE A-level certificates or IB and EB diplomas. Additionally, you will need an extended level of knowledge in 2 of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics and English.

MUL’s additional accreditations and recognitions include:

  • Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS MUL), a list by the World Health Organisation that includes only accredited medical universities. The Medical University of Lodz has an ECFMG® Sponsor Note, which means that students in the indicated graduation years are eligible to apply for ECFMG certification and take on the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE).
  • The courses of MUL fulfil all of the criteria of the General Medical Council (GMC) and graduates will be eligible to take the United Kingdom Medical Licensing Exam (UKMLA). This allows graduates to register with the GMC to practise medicine in the UK.
  • Medical education in Poland has been reviewed by the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) and is deemed to use accreditation standards on par with those of the United States.

Life as a Medical Student in Lodz, Poland

According to the legend, an explorer named Janusz travelled the stream by boat when a storm broke out. The man took the boat out and turned it upside down to shelter himself from the rain. In the morning, he was so happy with his accommodation that he decided never to leave. Soon, others joined him, and they decided to name the city “boat”. That’s how Lodz began.

Today, Lodz is the third-largest city in Poland, with 700,000 people. It has a historical reputation as a cultural meeting place because of its rapid growth in the 20th century. During that period, Poles, Russians, and Germans worked peacefully together to bring forth prosperity.

There is much remaining in the cityscape from those times. Many theatres and museums were built during period. At the same time, the old textile factories are now repurposed to meet the new needs of the people.

Lodz Medical University Term Dates

The academic year usually begins on the 1st of October every year. The first semester ends in late January. Right after the semester ends, you will have a 2-week examination period.

The second semester starts in mid-February and ends in June. The second examination session is throughout June. Summer vacation: July – September.
