The Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara, or UMF Timisoara as it’s also known as was founded in 1944 when King Michael I of Romania signed the decree-law No. 660. It was first established as a small faculty and as part of Western University.
It originally had only 416 students enrolled in the university in its first year but now boasts an impressive 4270 students with 700 academic staff. The university was named after the prominent Romanian scientist Victor Babeș. He was one of the founders of modern microbiology and also wrote one of the first treatises for bacteriology in the world.
It is one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in Romania, with its location in Timiș County, the capital city being Timișoara. As of the 2011 census, it is the third most populated city with 319,279 inhabitants and is on its way to becoming a candidate for the 2021 European Capital of Culture. It is one of the first European cities in the world to use electricity to illuminate public streets, second only to that New York City in America.
Its character is greatly influenced by the many cultures found within, where Turkey, Austria, Germany, and Serbia all left their mark in one way or another. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the nightlife or the theatrical performances and art galleries and museums, you’ll always find something to do in this progressive and cosmopolitan city. The culture will draw you in, and with Romania boasting a relatively affordable lifestyle compared to other countries, you will be more than comfortable here. The town is easily accessible on foot, and with a fast and efficient tram system, you need only wait a moment for it to arrive. What more can you expect from a city that was voted by Forbes Magazine as the most dynamic city and the best city for business in Romania (2016)
