Life as a Medical Student in Kutaisi, Georgia

Kutaisi is an ancient city, and it features in Greek mythology as the home of the Golden Fleece. The legend says the latter belonged to a winged ram, and it was given to King Aeetes as a symbol of kingship. Other scholars believe that the Golden Fleece in the ancient story represents a book of alchemical knowledge.

Whatever the case, Kutaisi has been the seat of many Georgian and Imeritian kings throughout medieval times. Moreover, it was a scholar centre thanks to the local Gelati Monastery and Motsameta Monastery.

Today, Kutaisi has a population of 150,000 people, and it is an important cultural and educational centre in Western Georgia. The city has enough theatres, museums, and art galleries to fill the spare time of any student.

Furthermore, there is a local holiday known as Kutaisoba. It is celebrated on May 2, and citizens may wear masks and participate in various performances. The most common activity is to barbecue in the local forest.

People often wear a “choxa” on this day - traditional Georgian garments. While it is not mandatory to wear one, it certainly feels rewarding. So does writing poetry, dancing, and participating in wrestling contests. Kutaisoba is always a spectacular event.
