About Oradea Medical University, Romania

The University of Oradea was founded in 1990. The namesake city is located in the northwestern part of Romania. Oradea is one of the largest universities in the country, consisting of 15 faculties, with over 14,000 students and 930 academic staff. The Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy was founded in 1991, and it has two sections - English and Romanian.

Oradea Medical University is committed to attracting international students, giving back to the local community, and developing scientific research. Here, aspiring doctors benefit from the expansive library, sports centre, 6 university clinics, research base, and student dorms.

In addition, Oradea has long been acknowledged as one of the more prosperous cities in Romania. An influx of trade and tourism has given the town an economic renewal of sorts, and it is now known as one of the more important social and cultural centres in North-West Romania.

The city is nestled among hills that divide the Crisana Plains and the Apuseni Mountains. There is much to see and do here in terms of architecture and cultural events. Oradea Fortress is also of note, with a history spanning over 1000 years. It was the reference point for the urban development and history of Oradea.

There’s no graduate entry medicine programme here, but student transfers are possible. At this point in time, pharmacy and dentistry courses are available in Romanian only.

The university is located at Strada Universității nr. 1, Oradea 410087, Romania.

Extracurricular and Leisure Activities

The University of Oradea has its own athletic club for various sports. Students can engage in classics like handball, volleyball, basketball, and football. There are also more niche choices like shooting and karate. Or people can just hit the gym for a quick workout.

Oradea Medical University Tuition Fees

The university offers a 6-year medicine course in English. The tuition fee is £ 4480 per year.

Student Accommodation

There are student hostels but getting in is hard because Romanian students have an advantage over international students. However, renting an apartment is just too affordable an option to pass.

The living costs are extremely cheap, with rent ranging from €200 to €400 per month and utilities averaging roughly €70 to €150 per month. Thus, living expenses are between €400 and €700 per month, including rent.

University Accreditation

The university is accredited by the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. The degree is recognised in all European Union states, the European Economic Area, and, of course, by the UK General Medical Council (GMC).

To satisfy the GMC’s requirements, you will need to have graduated successfully in a course containing at least 5,500 hours and lasting at least three years.

Life as a Medical Student in Oradea, Romania

According to legend, King Ladislaus the Holy of Hungary went hunting in the current Oradea fortress area. While resting for the night, Virgin Mary visited him in a dream and told him to build a church on the location. The devout king did as he was told, and thousands of pilgrims came to pray at the new altar. After a while, a castle was raised to protect the church.

Thus, the city is named for the fortress because “Oradea” means "castle". Today, the fortifications and the church still stand, giving the city a distinctly historical feel. The many baroque buildings of the Austro-Hungarian period of Oradea also add to the sophisticated atmosphere of the Old Town area.

International students find the city very safe and cosy. Moreover, they enjoy the local bar and club scene for its variety. Strolls in the city centre would often end in a pub or restaurant for a calorie recharge.

In addition, the city has several parks and gardens for people to reconnect with nature. For those who desire more, Dealul Somleu is a national park just a few miles away from the city. People can explore the hills through several trails across the location.
