In its 2800 years of history, the city has been part of numerous local empires, including a couple of Persian Empires, the Romans, the Umayyad Caliphate, several Turkic Empires, and the Russian Empire. In addition, Yerevan was a proud member of several independent Armenian kingdoms.

These rulers have left a mark on Armenian architecture, and Yerevan is not an exception with its unique looks and atmosphere. The local style is very characteristic, with distinct square shapes and heavy stone-built structures.
