About the University of Rijeka

University of Rijeka (UNIRI) was established in 1973. However, 2 of its faculties date back to the 18th century. They were founded between 1726 and 1728 and later became part of the modern university. The school is located in Rijeka, and nowadays, it consists of 9 faculties, 4 departments, and 1 academy.

Rijeka is situated in Western Croatia on the coast of the Kvarner Gulf and the Adriatic Sea. It is the third-largest city and the principal seaport of the country. Rijeka has a population of over 120,000, around 15% of which are students at the UNIRI. 

Courses Offered at The University of Rijeka

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Rijeka offers only a medicine programme fully taught in English. The faculty provides its students with the most modern medical equipment to train with. Also, the cooperating hospitals and clinics of the university allow free access for the students to be able to attend and take part in patients’ treatment.

The tuition fee for the 6-year medicine degree is a year. It can be paid in 1 or 2 instalments.

This university ranks its applicants based on the score of the entrance exam in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Maths. You can sit the exam only in Croatia, at Rijeka, Faculty of medicine. The school also requires high school evaluation for Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.

Accommodation

The dormitory of Trsat offers housing for UNIRI students. The buildings consist of apartments for 1 or 2 students with a private bathroom and kitchen. The apartments are luxuriously equipped with beds, desks, chairs, cupboards, and kitchen equipment. The price per month for a bed here is around €70.

Living in the dorms will never be boring. The administration organises activities like excursions, cultural and sports programmes, and dance and cooking classes. Those activities are organised based on the student's university schedules so anyone who wants can take part in them.

Some students may prefer to live in private accommodation, so in Rijeka, they can rent a 1-bedroom flat for about €270 per month. Other expenses like food and utilities, on average, cost around €600 monthly, but they are all based on your standards.

Leisure & Sports Activities

Student associations at Rijeka University provide a wide range of sports and leisure activities in the city. The Student Cultural Centre (SKC) actively encourages students to explore arts and culture, offering opportunities to participate in various cultural events and educational activities.

Students can engage in captivating projects such as STIFF – the International Student Film Festival, Music Festival Impulse, Festival of Actors’ Academies, Gallery SKC, and more. They even have the chance to develop their own projects and apply for the annual Student Cultural Centre contest.

The Rijeka University Sports Association (RÅ SS) publishes the sports magazine "UnisportMag" and organizes the Unisport league, which features sports tournaments with over 2,000 participants. Additionally, they organize the UKSUR Cup, Acedicus, Student Sports Day, and Academic Rabbit races.

In 2020, the city of Rijeka was honoured with the title of European Capital of Culture. Furthermore, Rijeka boasts four large shopping centres and numerous smaller shops and centres. With its seaside location, there is a plethora of activities related to the sea available for students to enjoy.

Term Dates

The academic year is divided into 2 terms, each consisting of classes and examination periods. The winter semester starts on the 1st of October and finishes at the end of January. The exam session is held in February.

The teaching period for the summer semester is between the 1st of March and the 11th of June. The exam period is between mid-June and mid-July.
