Life as a Medical Student in Milan, Italy

There are two Milans - one on the surface and one underneath it. The first one is of bright culture and spectacular fashion, and it’s the popular image of the city. The second Milan is one of mysteries and magic; it’s the Milan of myths.

There are stories of active secret societies within the city. It’s been the territory of masons and the Illuminati who pursued their own ends through the centuries. The Sforza family has left many landmarks in Milan that allegedly point to a secret location full of treasure and arcane knowledge.

Rumour is that Leonardo Da Vinci himself has devised many of the clues and the treasure chamber itself during his 15 years stay in the city. After all, the Sforza duke commissioned the genius for many pieces of immortal art.

Speaking of immortality, the city has been a playground for witches since Roman times. The Giobia Festival or Giubiana is an ancient tradition in Lombardy (Milan’s Region) that dates back thousands of years. During the festival, people light bonfires and burn witch puppets on them. The event takes place at the end of January, and it’s a lot jollier than it sounds.

Probably that’s why the Inquisition had so much power in the region in medieval times - witch trials might have seemed like another holiday. However, one cannot speak of the Inquisition without mentioning the devil. The latter has literally left his imprint on the city.

In the courtyard of St. Ambrose’s Church, an ancient solitary column stands next to a line of trees. According to the legend, the devil tried to lead the saint into temptation, but conversing with the holy man proved quite irritating for the father of lies. In the end, he struck the column in frustration, and the marks of his horns are still visible on it. One can even smell sulphur.

These are but a few of the mysteries that lie beneath the glamorous surface of Milan. Plenty more are awaiting.
