About the University of Tartu

The University of Tartu was established in 1632 as a national Estonian higher education institution. The university is home to more than 13,000 students, 10% of whom are international. The university has several historic buildings included in the European Heritage Label list. The school is ranked as being at the top of the most prestigious Estonian universities.

Tartu is the second-largest city in the country after the capital Tallinn. Its population goes over 90,000, with a high percentage of students living there. The city fascinates its visitors with its beauty and cultural heritage and is chosen to be the European Capital of Culture in 2024.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tartu offers a medical degree course entirely taught in English. The programme aims to prepare future doctors who will be able to make crucial decisions and act independently in the patients’ treatment. Being one of the most preferable European medical schools must have a reason. That’s why Tartu University hires only well-known professors in their area.

University of Tartu Admission & Entry Requirements

The admission score is ranked based on the applicants’ results on the international entrance test (70% of the final score) and the score of the motivation letter (30% of the final score).  Also, they have to provide an English certificate. 

Accommodation

The University of Tartu has 4 dormitories available for international students in the city of Tartu near the main building of the school. The facilities consist of single and double rooms fully furnished with beds, desks, chairs, wardrobes and shelves. There are shared showers and toilets on each floor, separated for males and females.

The rent includes all the utilities, the use of the laundry rooms, and all the common facilities in the building. Table tennis and leisure time rooms are available on the first floor of each building. The monthly rent for a place in a double room is €107 and for a single room is €154.

Living on your own in Tartu costs around €1000 per month. Private 1-bedroom apartment costs between €290 and €400 per month. For electricity, heating, water, and Internet, you will pay up to €250/month. Food and leisure time are based on your standards, but on average a student spends no more than €350-€400 monthly.
