About Nicolaus Copernicus University–Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz (NCU CM)

Nicolaus Copernicus University was established in 1945 as a public higher education institution. The university’s main campus is located in Torun, Poland, where the prominent scientist Nicolaus Copernicus was born. Naturally, the university is named after him. However, the medical faculty is located in Bydgoszcz.

Bydgoszcz is located in northern Poland, with a population of more than 340,000 people. The city is famous for its architecture consisting of neo-gothic, neo-baroque, neoclassicist, modernist, and Art Nouveau buildings.

There are two teaching hospitals at Collegium Medicum, where students can practise on-site. Moreover, the university collaborates with 7 more hospitals in Bydgoszcz and Torun. 

If you wish to study medicine in English in Poland, NCU CM is the right choice. This medical school is well-equipped with the most modern technologies. 

The medicine programme lasts for 6 years and is entirely taught in English. The curriculum combines theoretical and practical lessons to guide you and show you what it’s like to be a real doctor. Summer placements are obligatory and last 4 weeks. The awarded degree after successful graduation is a Master’s degree.

NCU CM does not offer graduate entry, but students willing to transfer are welcome here.

Extracurricular and Leisure Activities

Nicolaus Copernicus University in Bydgoszcz has several student organisations that may be of particular interest to internationals. The International Federation of Medical Students Association brings medical students together for various projects, trips, and events. It’s an excellent way to build connections with like-minded people.

In addition, the Multicultural Student Association is focused on creating a stimulating environment for international students. They can enjoy various extracurricular activities and events.

The Student Scientific Society aims to organise research-oriented minds on campus. They attend conferences, write academic papers, and attend various training and educational events. Future doctors with scientific aspirations would probably find themselves at home with this group.

The Academic Sports Association organises summer and winter sports camps for students with athletic interests. The organisation takes part in various varsity competitions. It is an excellent opportunity to nurture team and leadership skills while having fun.

Last but not least, the Collegium Medicum Choir accepts students with vocal skills. The group attends various competitions and has earned multiple awards in its history. Moreover, they perform at both local and international events, so it’s an excellent opportunity to travel as well.

Preparatory course

The preparatory course is not obligatory, but it’s an excellent way to start your journey into medicine. It is held online by academic teachers. It includes the most important subjects you will need for your medical studies - Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The course takes around a month.

Accreditation

The university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and thus recognised by the World Health Organisation. Graduating with a degree from NCU CM will give you worldwide recognition to practice medicine.

Accommodation

The university offers student housing. One of the most modern dormitories in the country is their Students House №3, for international students. The whole staff there is English-speaking. The building is close to university hospitals, teaching facilities, and the medical library. The location is not far from the city centre and is one of the most popular shopping malls.

This hostel offers 108 single rooms and 72 double rooms that are fully equipped. Each room has a private bathroom, and a fully-equipped kitchen is shared with every two rooms.

The monthly price is very reasonable, around  for a single room and per person for a double room.

Still, if you decide to live on your own, you can rent a single-bedroom apartment for around per month, depending on how close to the city centre you want. Living costs are another on average.

Life as a Medical Student in Bydgoszcz, Poland

Bydgoszcz (pronounced Bid-goshtch) is a cosy town with a calm and quaint feel. The city is on the western bank of the Vistula River, while the Brda River goes right through it before joining the former. That’s why Bydgoszcz has many wharves and is Poland's centre of inland navigation.

Bydgoszcz boasts a variety of amenities, including shopping malls, gyms, appealing parks, and museums. The city is notable for its abundance of green spaces, particularly the renowned Myslecinek Forest Park, situated just outside Bydgoszcz. This tranquil haven offers a botanic garden, a horse stud, a ski slope during winter, a zoo, and ample space for running, cycling, rollerblading, or merely lounging on the grass.

Moreover, the local cultural scene offers a wealth of entertainment options. Local theatres, concert halls, and museums cater to the intellectual curiosity of international students. Notably, the Brain Club stands as a pivotal hub for contemporary jazz music.

Term Dates

The academic years are divided into two semesters with a break between them and an examination session after every semester.

The winter semester starts on the 1st of October and lasts until the 2nd of January. The winter examination session is between the 3rd and 16th of February.  

The summer semester starts on the 24th of February and finishes on the 15th of June. The examination session is from the 16th until the 29th of June.
