Life as a Medical Student in Hamburg, Germany

The city of Hamburg originated as a castle built by Charlemagne in the ninth century. The original structure was named Hamburg, and while little remains of it, the name stuck to the city.

Hamburg has a rich history as an important trade port in the Hanseatic League and an industrial center. In addition, the city has given much to the world, including Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelsohn, Karl Lagerfeld, and last but not least, the hamburger itself.

Today, the city hosts more than 100,000 university students. While the quality of German education is indisputable, the entertainment potential of the town could easily impair the academic focus of aspiring doctors.

Hamburg has over a hundred musical venues, such as concert stages, nightclubs, bars, and opera houses. The local music scene has deep roots and international recognition. The Beatles themselves lived and played in Hamburg for two years.

In addition, the city is remarkably green, thanks to an urban plan that’s been active for more than a century. Hamburg has clean waterways, tree-lined streets, and many enormous city parks. The central Planten und Biomen is right in the city centre, and it contains several themed gardens. The Japanese garden there even has its own koi pond!

The city itself has no skyscrapers and only a few high-rise buildings. The spires of the skyline belong primarily to churches and governmental and cultural buildings.

Furthermore, Hamburg has numerous English-speaking communities. The British diaspora in the city is very active. They have established several societies, including cricket clubs, the Hamburg Exiles Rugby Club, The Professional Women’s Forum, and The British Decorative and Fine Arts Society.

Global Connections: Engaging in the Multicultural Campus Tapestry in Hamburg

German culture exudes an atmosphere of safety and respect, ensuring the well-being of all students, including hijabi women. Throughout the campus and the city, the faculty of medicine actively promotes an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere, celebrating the mosaic of diversity and embracing the richness of cultural backgrounds.
