Life as a Medical Student in Brno, Czech Republic

With a thousand years of written history, Brno has plenty of stories to tell, but none as glorious as the legend of the Brno Dragon. During the 16th century, the locals were terrorised by a vicious beast that ate the livestock and scared the people away from the city.

The prince offered a bounty of 1000 gold coins for whoever slew the beast, and a butcher from another town took him up on the offer. He filled a cowhide with caustic lime and left it near the monster’s den. The dragon fell into the trap, and the citizens displayed its body for everyone to see. Even today, it is hanging from the ceiling in the Old Townhall - a 16 feet crocodile. How the beast came to Czech Republic is a source of many legends in the Brno pubs.

Speaking of pubs, there are plenty of those in the city. With almost 90,000 students, the city has various sources of leisure and recreation: theatres, museums, galleries, and festivals. Ignis Brunensis is an annual fireworks competition of international significance, and the show attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Furthermore, the city has many park spaces and boasts excellent air quality. Thus, it’s a great place to take a walk, especially from one landmark to another, and Brno has plenty to offer in terms of historical sites and monuments. Veveri Castle is a complex on the city's central hill, and it’s worth exploring. The Brno Ossuary is the second-largest ossuary in Europe, and it’s a mandatory stop for all fans of the macabre. Necromancy is not allowed inside.
