About Slovak Medical University

Slovak Medical University is a state higher education institution founded in 2002. The university has 4 faculties devoted to health and science-related education. The university is located in Slovakia’s capital - Bratislava.

The city of Bratislava has a population of more than 430,000 inhabitants, which makes it the largest in Slovakia. It is the political, economic, and cultural centre of the country. The city hosts some of the top European Universities.

The university offers a medicine programme fully taught in English. It aims to prepare future doctors to be able to act on their own in real situations. The curriculum includes theoretical lectures, practical training in simulators, and bedside teaching in clinics and hospitals. 

It’s no wonder the university ranks as one of the best Slovakian medical universities. It has modern medical equipment and hires the best professionals not only in teaching but also in the medical field.

Extracurricular and Leisure Activities

There is an opportunity for research work at Slovak Medical University in Bratislava. The Faculty of Medicine works on local and international projects and participates in multiple grants as a donor and recipient.

The campus doesn’t offer many opportunities for recreational activities. It is located in the northwestern part of the city in a district affluent with hospitals, clinics, and the headquarters of the Ministry of Health itself. There is a symbolic consolation prize for students at the university, however. The campus is situated in the foothills of the Little Carpathians, a protected mountain range ideal for weekend outdoor activities.

Slovak Medical University Admission & Entry Requirements

Admission criteria here is your score achieved at the university’s entrance exams. They consist of 80 Biology and 80 Chemistry questions. The exam is held only in the Faculty of Medicine at the Slovak Medical University.

English-level proficiency is mandatory for an applicant to be allowed to study medicine in English.

Accreditation

Slovak Medical University is recognised by the World Health Organisation and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. SMU meets all the GMC, European and international standards for providing proper medical education. 

A diploma from this university is recognised worldwide. Successful graduation here means you will be allowed to take licensing examinations and practise everywhere around the world

Accommodation

Slovak Medical University offers students housing in buildings located close to the university and around 1 km away from the city center. Around the buildings, you can find excellent restaurants where you can taste traditional Slovakian cuisine. Shopping centers, green areas, and parks also surround the building. 

The rooms offered are double, fully furnished, and also equipped with TVs, refrigerators, kitchens, and private bathrooms. The facility also offers shared PC rooms and a modern hall where cultural events can be held.

Students who prefer private accommodation will pay around €450 for monthly rent. The regular price for a monthly transportation pass is around €30. And basic utilities and Internet cost around €200 per month. Other expenses like food and leisure time activities on average cost €300.

While the center of Bratislava is a cultural marvel, students of Slovak Medical University usually choose to locate closer to the campus, which is on the western outskirts of the city. The region has a much more rural feel, and admirers of nature will feel at home there.

The area has several parks in the vicinity, and the Little Carpathians are much like the backyard of Slovak Medical University. Lovers of scenery should not miss those casual strolls along the Danube - nothing lifts the spirit quite like them.

Term Dates

The academic year starts in mid-September and is divided into 2 terms - winter and summer. 

The winter semester begins on the 16th of September, and the classes end on the 18th of December. The examination period is between the 4th of January and the 5th of February.

Classes for the summer semester are held from the 10th of February until the 21st of May. The examination period begins on the 24th of May and finishes on the 2nd of July.
