Palacky University was established in 1573. It is a private university located in the city of Olomouc. Being the 2nd-oldest university in the Czech Republic doesn’t mean it’s old-fashioned or outdated. It is currently 1 of the best medical universities in the Czech Republic to study in English.
Olomouc is located in the East of the Czech Republic on the Morava River. It is also known as the University City as it has the highest density of university students in Central Europe - over 25,000. Olomouc dates back to the 10th century and attracts many visitors with its ancient tourist attractions.
The Faculty of Medicine at Palacky University offers medicine and dentistry courses entirely taught in English. Both programmes follow the European and GMC standards for medical education.
The pre-clinical years are devoted to theoretical subjects, namely the basics of science and human anatomy. But medical practice is as important as theoretical knowledge. So in the clinical years, you will start practising in simulators and attend teaching hospitals. Also, summer clerkships are mandatory.
Like many other European medical universities, Palacky University in Olomouc is in strong cooperation with the best hospitals in the country. This will grant you access to their facilities and the best professionals to learn from.
The university doesn’t offer graduate entry and doesn’t accept student transfers.

Every applicant to medicine or dentistry must sit the Palacky University entrance examination, which is made up of 3 separate written papers:
For English language requirements, non-native English speakers must also demonstrate English proficiency through 1 of the following exams: Cambridge FCE, IELTS (minimum 6.0), TOEFL iBT (minimum 87), PTE Academic (minimum 59) or equivalent. After the entrance exam, students are invited to a short interview to assess their English speaking ability and motivation for studying medicine or dentistry. The interview is conversational in tone, but being able to demonstrate your motivation clearly with a realistic understanding of the profession will make a great impression.

This makes students eligible for further study, postgraduate training, and medical licensing in many countries around the world, including the UK, the US, Canada, throughout the EU, and more.
Palacky University's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry offers 1 of the most respected medicine programmes in English in Central Europe, their 6-year General Medicine programme MUDr. (Doctor of General Medicine), internationally equivalent to an MD.
The programme structure is divided into 3 main parts:
Years 1 & 2 are dedicated to building a strong pre-clinical foundation. The curriculum covers the Core Biomedical Sciences: Anatomy, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Histology, and Physiology. Czech language classes are compulsory throughout the first 3 years, so students can communicate clearly in hospital and clinical settings.
Years 3 & 4 are for Bridge Sciences that transition into Pathology, Microbiology, and Pharmacology. This part of the curriculum connects the basic sciences to clinical medicine to prepare students for their hospital rotations.
Years 5 & 6 are when students start carrying out clinical training with real patients. Students rotate through all major clinical disciplines at the University Hospital Olomouc, which is directly on the campus. This means that students don’t need to travel between teaching sites since lectures, practicals, and clinics are all within the same campus. Core rotations include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Neurology, and more. The 6th and final year is dedicated entirely to hands-on, bedside clinical training. Clinical training can also be carried out in partner clinics & hospitals.
The MUDr. degree is awarded after students pass state examinations in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Epidemiology, Social Medicine & Medical Law.
The university also offers an internationally recognised 5-year dentistry programme in English that awards an MDDr. degree (Doctor of Dental Medicine).
As with Medicine, the English Dentistry curriculum is divided into 3 main parts:
In Years 1 & 2, students begin with the Core Life Sciences to build their theoretical foundations. This includes Anatomy, General Physiology, Histology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Biophysics. Czech language classes run from year 1 to year 3 to prepare students for clinical communication in Czech.
In Years 3 & 4, students move on to Preclinical & Clinical Sciences. The programme introduces Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Pathological Physiology, alongside general medical subjects including Surgery and Internal Medicine. Students develop foundational hands-on dental skills in the preclinical phase before progressing to supervised patient contact.
The latter part of Year 4 & the entirety of Year 5 are dedicated to Dental Specialities & Clinical Practice. Students receive training across the full scope of dental disciplines under clinical supervision. This includes Preventive Dentistry, Cariology, Prosthetic Technology, Dental Radiology, Orthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, and Oral Surgery.
The MDDr. degree is awarded after state examinations in Prosthodontics & Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, and Operative Dentistry.
Palacky University Olomouc organises numerous cultural and social activities for students, such as balls and dance parties, athletic competitions, and outdoor activities. The biggest event is the May Festival, which covers a week of fun with concerts, exhibitions, presentations, and various performances.
In addition, international students should join some of the local organisations. Some of them have an academic focus, and they provide training and opportunities for aspiring doctors. Others are purely recreational. The Olomouc Japanese Club, for example, is a group that loves Japanese culture, and it’s an excellent crowd for quality films, creative workshops, and food and drink tastings.
The university has 12 dormitory buildings and 3 canteens divided into 2 campuses. The campuses offer different sports grounds, outside chess, table tennis, music clubs, and other entertainment.
The buildings consist of single, double, and triple rooms and have Wi-Fi. They are fully furnished and have private bathrooms. There are shared kitchens available for use at any time. The rent per month varies from .

According to legend, Julius Caesar was the founder of Olomouc (pronounced Olo-mowts). Still, there is no written record of the great commander ever setting foot in these lands. However, there was a Roman military camp named after him in the late days of the empire. The fort was named Iuliomontium (Mount Julius), and the current name of Olomouc is a distant descendant of the original.
Legendary founder or not, the city has plenty of factual history to boast about. It was the capital of Moravia, the seat of great kings, and the location of a bitter defeat for the Mongol Horde.
Today, Olomouc is the 2nd city in terms of cultural heritage in the Czech Republic. The town is abundant with landmarks, and the local churches are truly spectacular. The Holy Trinity Column is another majestic monument, and it took almost 40 years to be built.
Besides the interesting history, Olomouc is an exceptional place for students, thanks to:
