Dnipro Medical Institute of conventional and alternative medicine was established in 1993 by the former dean of Dnipro State University. The dean had the vision to transform the State University into a top medical school in Europe known for its excellent education and internationally renowned doctors. However, bureaucracy and politicians were holding him back.
With the odds against him, the dean, along with a few fellow doctors, mustered up the courage to form a union and establish their own private university just next door to the State University. They worked tirelessly and altruistically to achieve their dream of creating one of the best medical schools in Europe. They sacrificed most of their time, resources and effort to reach the world-class standard that the university has already achieved.
Dnipro Medical Institute is the only non-profit, accredited and private university in Ukraine to this day.
Since Dnipro State University and Dnipro Medical Institute are in the same building, they cooperate and work closely together. The majority of professors work in conjunction with both the universities, meaning the same teachers teach at both universities. Dnipro was founded on the orders of Grigori Potemkin, and it was envisioned as the third most significant city of the Russian Empire. The town was initially named Ekaterinoslav (Catherine’s Glory) after Catherine the Great. Thus, Dnipro was a child of history’s most extraordinary love affair between the daring general and the ambitious empress.
In 1787 Catherine personally laid the foundation stone of the Transfiguration Cathedral, and so she founded the city. Many of the original neoclassical buildings from that period are still standing in the Sobornyi District, including Potemkin’s Palace.
Now, Dnipro is the fourth largest city in Ukraine, with a population of 1 million. The city straddles both banks of the Dnieper and Samara rivers, which converge within its territory. The waters cool the city in the summers and keep the winters mild.
In addition, one of the most picturesque parks in the city is located on Dnieper’s Monastery Island. Explorers can access it via a pedestrian bridge and a few piers for small boats. The wooded alleys and the local monastery are a tranquil haven only a mile away from the city centre.
There are many other parks in the Sobornyi District, and one of them is right next to the Dnipro Medical Institute. Sevastopolsky Park is an excellent place for aspiring doctors to clear their minds after a day of lectures.
Fortunately, Dnipro offers other more sophisticated methods of recreation. The city has an opera, theatres, and the House of Organ and Chamber Music. The latter is within the Bryanskaya Church, and each year more than 300 performances are given by local and international masters of the pipe organ.
Last but not least, Dnipro is home to 55,000 students, many of whom are international. The city is full of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs to accommodate their social life. In addition, exciting events are abundant throughout the year, and the only challenge for active adventurers is to find time in their schedules.
The academic year normally starts mid-September (around the 15th) and lasts until the 22-23rd of December, just before Christmas Holidays. The examination period is between mid-January and mid-February.
The second semester starts around mid-February, right after the exams, and lasts until June. The second exam session is throughout the month of July.
Note: You can do your clinical rotations in the UK (or your home country)
