The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1919, and it was then part of the University of Cluj. In 1948 it became an independent Medico-Pharmaceutical institute with 5 different faculties: Medicine, Paediatrics, Stomatology, Pharmacy and Hygiene, but Hygiene lasted only for 10 years.

In 1990 the Medico-Pharmaceutical Institute changed its name into the “University of Medicine and Pharmacy”. Two years later, the iconic figure of Iuliu Haţieganu has been added to the university’s name.

The university attracts international students to come and study medicine or dentistry in English at Cluj Medical University, from all over the world and almost every country in Europe. International students are offered a world-renowned masters degree in M.D. or D.M.D (superior to MBBS/BDS) that is accepted worldwide. Students will graduate as fully licensed doctors or dentists with an EU degree and can work anywhere in the European Union.

There are no graduate entry medicine or graduate dentistry courses available, but the university accepts student transfers.

Here you can study medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English. Tuition fees and study durations are as follows:

  • Medicine – 6 years, €6000 per year, 170 seats for EU students and 30 seats for non-EU students
  • Dentistry – 6 years, €6000 per year, 35 seats for EU students and 15 seats for non-EU students
  • Pharmacy – 5 years, €6000 per year, 20 seats for EU students and 20 seats for non-EU students

Student Accommodation

The university offers dormitory accommodation but gives preference to students with Romanian citizenship. That’s why most international students prefer to rent an apartment near the university.

A month’s rent in a single-bedroom apartment will cost you between €300 – €400 depending on how close you are to the city centre. For the bigger part of international students, this price is affordable as it’s below the European average. Plus, you will have the comfort of privacy and less distraction for studying at home. Other expenses, including leisure activities, will cost you around €400 per month.

For spending free time, Cluj-Napoca offers a rich variety of activities for both daytime and nightlife. Here you can find numerous museums, cinemas, theatres, clubs, bars, shopping centres, and sports facilities.

Iuliu Hatieganu University Admission & Entry Requirements

Students must have good grades in Biology and Chemistry and a third subject in their high school certificate, e.g. A-levels, Baccalaureate, final leaving certificate etc. Students who have not yet received their final certification can apply with their results sheet if they have it before the deadline.

Students must apply as soon as possible, as an early application allows for more time to build a strong application file. Applications are currently open for 2020 entry at the Medical University of Cluj. Apply so one of our advisors can contact you with more information. There is no entrance exam for students from English speaking countries. Applicants from non-English speaking countries sit an exam in English at Cluj Medical University assessing the grammar and proficiency of their English language skills.

Unviersity Term Dates

The first semester for first-year medicine and dentistry students begins in early October and ends mid-January. The Christmas vacations are usually between 22 December till 5 January. The second semester starts on 26 February and ends in early June.
