The Metropolitan University College of Medicine (MUCM) is a modern private medical university founded in 2017 in St. John’s, Antigua & Barbuda. The College of Medicine offers a 4-year MD programme in English and a 1-year Pre-Med course. The Pre-Med Programme at Metropolitan University College of Medicine is a 45-week, 3-semester programme worth 90 college-level credits. It is designed so students can build a strong foundation for medicine by completing coursework in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, English, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Neuroscience, and Psychology.
Successfully completing the pre-med course lets students progress directly into the main 4-year MD programme.
Advanced placements in the pre-med programme may be available for students with prior relevant undergraduate study, which can reduce the overall duration of the programme.
The Doctor of Medicine programme at MUCM is divided into 2 main phases throughout 4 years:
Years 1 & 2 - Basic Medical Sciences
The basic sciences phase is 75 weeks long and lasts for 5 semesters. During this stage, students study the core medical science subjects that form the foundation for clinical training. At the end of the basic sciences phase, students complete an integrative clinical science semester designed to bridge pre-clinicals with their clinical application.
Teaching during this phase is delivered through lectures, case-based learning, small group discussions, and research activities.
Years 3 & 4 - Clinical Sciences
The clinical sciences phase consists of approximately 72 weeks of hands-on clinical training over 6 semesters. Students complete 48 weeks of core clerkships across major medical specialities, followed by 24 weeks of elective rotations. Clinical training is carried out at approved teaching hospitals and clinical affiliates in the US, the UK, and the Caribbean under the supervision of seasoned professionals.
