Didn't Get a UK Medicine Offer? Your 2026 Guide to Clearing & International Backups

medicine Clearing 2026

Unfortunately, the vast majority of students don’t get an offer to study medicine in the UK and are left wondering what backup options there are. Well 1 of these is applying through medicine clearing 2026, but the reality is that it’s far less reliable than it seems.

In this blog, we will discuss what medicine clearing is, why you can’t really count on it, and reliable international medical school backups you can have.

TL;DR
Medicine Clearing 2026 is highly unreliable, so your best move is to secure a medical school offer early, especially through trusted international options.

Key Takeaways in this blog include:

  • Medicine Clearing 2026 has extremely limited availability due to high competition
  • Relying on Clearing can cost you a full year, with no guarantee of success, even if you reapply to study medicine in the UK
  • Studying medicine abroad offers a faster & more secure path to becoming a doctor.

What is UCAS Medicine Clearing?

Every year, once A-level results are released (Thursday, 13th August 2026), any places that remain unfilled become available through UCAS Clearing.

Clearing is a system designed to match students with these remaining university spots. You may be eligible if:

  • You applied after 30 June (though for medicine, this is difficult without having taken the UCAT the previous year)
  • You didn’t receive any offers, or none you wish to accept
  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your offers
  • You chose to decline your firm place in your application

In short, Clearing is needed when you’re looking for another opportunity to secure a university place if your original plans didn’t work out, and some students can think of it as a backup.

Can You Actually Get Medicine Through Clearing?

Technically, yes, but in reality, it’s extremely unlikely.

Medicine is already 1 of the most competitive courses in the UK, with far more applicants than available seats (There are about 9500 seats & around 25000+ applicants annually), so you can expect the UCAS medicine rejection rates in 2026/2027 to be about the same.

And in that regards the issue for clearing comes from the fact that:

  1. Medical schools carefully control their intake numbers
  2. Offers are usually accepted and met
  3. There’s already an oversupply of qualified applicants
  4. Sports typically get filled on the 1st intake

So with the already low medical school vacancies in the UK in 2026, and by the time Clearing opens, there’s usually little to nothing left to offer.

On rare occasions, a few places might open up due to students missing their offer conditions and last-minute withdrawals. But these situations are unpredictable and extremely limited, often disappearing within hours and the quickest to apply get them.

And remember, taking a gap year and reapplying requires retaking entrance exams, rebuilding your application, and competing again against thousands of equally qualified students, with no guarantee of a different result. So, what now?

What Other Backup Options do I Have?

There isn’t a backup option in the UK other than clearing, so in this case, you’d just have to reapply next year, unless you apply to study medicine abroad.

Many students apply to medical schools in Europe or the Caribbean. These offer excellent medical teaching standards and internationally recognised medical degrees, including:

  1. European University Tbilisi
  2. Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy
  3. University of Zagreb, Faculty of Medicine
  4. Pavol Jozef Safarik University
  5. University of Health Sciences School of Medicine in Antigua & Barbuda

You can also study medicine with no entrance exam at all (No UCAT/BMAT required either) with much less competition per seat and lower tuition fees than UK private options (as low as €5,050 in the European University Tbilisi).

What Should You Do Right Now?

If you’re reading this after not receiving an offer, the worst thing you can do is wait and hope Clearing works out at this stage.

At the same time, begin actively exploring international medical schools that are still accepting applications. Many of these universities have later deadlines, multiple intakes, and far less competition, which gives you a realistic path forward this year instead of losing time.

Next, focus on getting a confirmed offer as soon as possible. Book a free consultation and 1 of our expert advisors will help take care of this part.

Most importantly, think long-term. Whether you study in the UK or abroad, your end goal is the same, and that is to become a doctor.
