AUC School of Medicine Requirements: GPA, MCAT, UK Track & Transfers

AUC requirements

Have you considered studying in the Caribbean?

If you’re looking at your options to become a doctor in the US or the UK, you’ve probably seen the high requirements, fierce competition and expensive tuition and thought that it may not be for you. However, there are several exceptional medical schools in the Caribbean that not only have flexible admission requirements, but also very reasonable tuition fees and living costs.

In this blog, we will break down the AUC School of Medicine requirements for each pathway, including what AUC looks for beyond grades and test scores.

While AUC School of Medicine offers an exceptional, globally recognized path to practicing in the US or UK, navigating their holistic admission metrics can be tricky. Because they don't enforce a rigid minimum GPA or MCAT score cut-off, your acceptance hinges entirely on how strategically you present your academic prerequisites, letters of recommendation, and clinical motivation. Don't guess your way through a Caribbean application. Join our FREE upcoming webinar to unlock an insider admission blueprint! Learn exactly how AUC evaluates non-traditional backgrounds, how to utilize alternative tests like the UCAT or GAMSAT safely, and how to position your profile for a successful residency match!

What are the AUC Acceptance Rates and Minimum GPA?

The university does not publish official AUC School of Medicine acceptance rates and GPA requirements, because AUC does not have a minimum GPA requirement. Instead, the Admissions Committee looks at applicants holistically rather than judging them only by their GPA or test scores.

However, the university publicly shares recent incoming-student academic averages, which can give students a better idea of what they need to get accepted.

On average, directly admitted students in the September 2024, January 2025 and May 2025 classes had:

  • Average overall GPA: 3.30
  • Average science GPA: 3.04
  • Average MCAT score: 493

It's important to note that these figures are not minimum entry requirements, but averages, so students with lower scores may still be accepted if the rest of their application is strong. AUC looks at both overall GPA and science GPA, but it also takes into account maturity, critical judgement, adaptability, life experience and motivation for medicine.

What MCAT Score Do You Need for AUC?

Just like GPA, there are no AUC School of Medicine requirements for MCAT scores.

However, the university does provide a useful guideline: MCAT scores of 490 and above are considered competitive. AUC also states that the Admissions Committee likes to see MCAT section scores of 121 or higher for biology and chemistry.

Although the average for accepted students’ MCAT scores was 493, applicants below these scores may still get accepted, as long as the rest of their application is strong, including a strong personal statement, academic references, healthcare experience and a clear motivation for medicine.

US citizens, nationals and permanent residents must submit MCAT scores before their interview.

Applicants from other countries can submit the scores of the medical admissions tests that are accepted in their respective countries. For example, UK students can use their UCAT scores, Australian applicants can use their GAMSAT, and Indian students can use their NEET results. Also, AUC can waive exam score substitutions on an individual basis.

AUC will not consider MCAT, UCAT or NEET scores that are more than 5 years old, and GAMSAT scores must be less than 2 years old.

AUC Academic Requirements for the 4-Year MD Programme

To apply for AUC’s 4-year MD programme, applicants need a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university.

Your undergraduate studies should include Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry, and Physics or Statistics/Calculus. Biology and general chemistry each require 2 semesters with laboratory work.

AUC is flexible and can consider prerequisite substitutions or exceptions on a case-by-case basis. This is especially useful for students whose degree structure does not exactly match the standard US pre-med model, especially international applicants.

A complete application includes:

  • Official transcripts
  • A personal statement of no more than 750 words
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • A CV or resume
  • MCAT or equivalent test scores

A science-focused degree is preferred, but is not always mandatory, particularly for applicants who can demonstrate strong academic preparation and a clear commitment to medicine.

American University of the Caribbean UK Track Requirements

AUC has 2 UK Track options: 4-year MD and 6-year BSc to MD.

The 4-year MD UK Track follows the requirements as the standard MD programme, but it is available specifically for non-US citizens.

To apply for the 4-year UK Track, applicants must have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university. A health science-related field is preferred, but it is not mandatory in every case.
  • English language proficiency.

1 important point for UK applicants is that AUC does not use UCAS for the MD programme.

The 6-year BSc to MD pathway is an undergraduate-entry option and requires:

  • BBB at A-level
  • GCSE English and Maths
  • 1 or 2 science A-levels, depending on the partner university.

How to Transfer to the American University of the Caribbean Medical School

AUC accepts transfer applications from students who are currently enrolled in another accredited medical school. However, applicants are expected to be in good academic standing at their current medical school and be able to provide a full academic record.

Each transfer applicant is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and AUC decides at what point a student can enter the MD programme based on completed coursework, academic performance, transcripts and overall readiness for the curriculum.

The AUC transfer application checklist includes:

  • A personal statement of no more than 750 words
  • A transfer statement of 250-500 words explaining your current medical school status and the reason for transferring
  • A resume including your education history
  • 2 letters of recommendation from medical school professors
  • Official transcripts from all universities attended
  • A letter of good standing from the current medical school dean
  • An official MCAT score report, if available
  • USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 reports, if available

Students accepted for transfer with advanced standing must complete at least 2 years of medical education at AUC, with the latest possible point of joining the AUC MD course being  Semester 5 of the Medical Sciences phase.
