The University of Oradea was founded in 1990. The namesake city is located in the northwestern part of Romania. Oradea is one of the largest universities in the country, consisting of 15 faculties, with over 14,000 students and 930 academic staff. The Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy was founded in 1991, and it has two sections - English and Romanian.

While resting for the night, Virgin Mary visited him in a dream and told him to build a church on the location. The devout king did as he was told, and thousands of pilgrims came to pray at the new altar. After a while, a castle was raised to protect the church.
Thus, the city is named for the fortress because “Oradea” means "castle". Today, the fortifications and the church still stand, giving the city a distinctly historical feel. The many baroque buildings of the Austro-Hungarian period of Oradea also add to the sophisticated atmosphere of the Old Town area.
