The Medical University of Semmelweis is the oldest medical school in Hungary. It was founded in 1969 and had the largest faculty with nearly 4000 foreign and local students. The medical university’s name derives from Ignaz Semmelweis, who discovered the cause of puerperal fever and helped introduce hand disinfection standards in obstetrics clinics.

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary and is one of the largest cities in the European Union by population. Budapest has strengths in almost all aspects of society including commerce, finance, media, technology, education and entertainment. The city lies along the Danube River and is classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Semmelweis Medical University offers 6-year medicine courses and 5-year dentistry and pharmacy courses. There are no 4-year graduate entry medicine courses in Hungary. Transfers from a medical program are possible though.

Medical University of Semmelweis Tuition Fees

Here you have the opportunity to study medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, all taught in English. The tuition fees are between €16,000-17,000 per year for medicine and dental medicine and around €10,700 per year for pharmacy.

Student Accommodation

Semmelweis University of medicine offers student accommodation in 5 dormitories with a total of around 700 beds. Getting a room, however, might be hard because you will have to compete with Hungarian, German and other nationalities who chose to study medicine in English. Acceptance is based on the applicant’s social/welfare status, the community services and scholastic records.

The living cost in Budapest is more than acceptable so renting a flat will probably be a better option to go for. Rent prices start from €200 and utilities average roughly €80 per month. Combined with other living expenses such as food and entertainment, you can expect to spend from €550 to €750 per month in total.

As one of the most populated capitals in Europe, Budapest has plenty of entertainment to offer. Probably those of you who are interested in culture and history would be the luckiest. Here you can visit many historical museums, monuments, and castles. We recommend you take a walk around the Danube river or in the City Park to truly experience Budapest’s vibe.

As for nightlife activities, the city is nowhere near being short of things to do. You can find all kinds of clubs, restaurants, pubs and festivals here. If you like going to concerts and seeing your favourite performers live, there’s a good chance you might see them here in Budapest.

Medical University of Semmelweis Admission & Entry Requirements

The deadline for application is 31 May. Students should apply as soon as possible to secure their seat!

To be admitted into Semmelweis university you will need to pass the entrance exams which are held in the medical school itself or worldwide at locations provided by officially appointed Semmelweis representatives. You will also have to attend a personal interview so your knowledge, skills and motivation could be evaluated.

You must pass 4 multiple-choice tests which consist of 20 questions for 20 minutes each. The subjects are Biology, Chemistry, General English and Biomedical English.

Accepted students coming from EU and EEA countries do not need a student visa but have to apply for a residence permit within 90 days after their arrival to Hungary. Non-EU students have to apply for a student visa, and this is something that Medlink Students can help with as well.

University Term Dates

The fall semester begins around 10 September and ends around 15 December. 16 December 2019 – 31 January 2020 is the exam period. The spring semester starts at the beginning of February and lasts until mid-May. The exam period follows immediately after and ends in early-July.

Semmelweis Medical University Curriculum & Syllabus

The first three years being pre-clinical with a heavy emphasis on the fundamental subjects; Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Medical Psychology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Physiology, Medical Chemistry and Medical Physics, for example.

The next two years focus on clinical practice as well as preventative medicine, with more of an emphasis on practical work, and visiting patients in hospitals. You will take elective studies, for example, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Cardiology, Public Health and Oral Surgery, for example.

The final year is reserved for examinations (including the thesis) as well as electives in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neurology, Urology, and Psychiatry. A comprehensive state exam is also given.

University Accreditation

You will get an international degree in medicine when you complete your studies successfully. The degree is accepted in all European Union states, European Economic Area and of course by the General Medical Council (GMC), the World Health Organization, the State Education Department (NY, USA) and the Medical Board of California.
