The Medical University of Semmelweis is the oldest medical school in Hungary, it was founded in 1969 and has the largest faculty with nearly 4000 foreign and local students. The medical university was named after Ignaz Semmelweis who discovered the cause of puerperal fever and helped introduce hand disinfection standards in obstetrics clinics.
Budapest is the capital city of Hungary and is one of the largest cities in the European Union by population. Budapest has strengths in almost all aspects of society including commerce, finance, media, technology, education and entertainment. The city lies along the Danube River and is classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Numerous monuments adorn this beautiful city with the parliament building, Buda Statue and the Liberty Statue to name but a few. Hungary is a member of the European Union, NATO and the Schengen Area.
The living costs are extremely cheap with rent from €200 per month and utilities averaging roughly €80 per month. So you can expect to pay altogether roughly €550 to €750 per month for everything inclusive.
This Medicine course is taught in English in Hungary. The tuition fees are between €15,200-15,800 per year.
The first three years being pre-clinical in nature with a heavy emphasis on the fundamental subjects; Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Medical Psychology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Physiology, Medical Chemistry and Medical Physics for example.
The next two years focus on clinical practice as well as preventative medicine, with more of an emphasis on practical work, and visiting patients in hospitals. You will take elective studies, for example, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Cardiology, Public Health and Oral Surgery for example.
The final year is reserved for examinations (including the thesis) as well as electives in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neurology, Urology, and Psychiatry. A comprehensive state exam is also given.
The degree is accepted in all European Union states, European Economic Area and of course by the General Medical Council (GMC), the World Health Organization, the State Education Department (NY, USA) and the Medical Board of California.
An admissions exam is given prior to entry into the medical university, this consists of a written portion which covers Biology, Chemistry, Physiology and Physics; as well as an oral exam. Naturally, Medlink Students will help you with this!
Accepted students coming from EU and EEA countries do not need a student visa but have to apply for a residence permit within 90 days after their arrival to Hungary. Non-EU students have to apply for a student visa, this is something that Medlink Students can help with as well.
