Studying Medicine in Lithuania at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LMSU)

With 2 Academies, 7 Faculties and 4 Research Institutes the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LMSU) is the largest institution of higher education for biomedical sciences in Lithuania and of the best places to study medicine in Europe. Established in 2010 after the merger of the Kaunas University of Medicine (KMU) and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (LVA) in 2019 the LMSU hosts 1142 international students from 71 countries. The University has practice bases in Israel, Germany, Sweden, Spain, UK, USA and an increasing number of joint study programmes.

 Apart from Medicine and Pharmacy in English, LMSU offers 14 other full degrees (bachelors or masters) taught in English such as Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, etc.

Requirements for entry into the first year:

Apart from the required application documents a university entrance exam is required except for the following cases:

  • The applicant submits Score Reports of SAT Subject Tests in Chemistry and Biology. If your score is 550 or above, you could be exempted from the entrance examination of LSMU. 
  • The applicant has successfully pursued studies in biomedical field at any other accredited university and were awarded a Bachelor Degree he/she may skip the LSMU’s entrance examination
  • A Levels‘  Certificate with grades A, A or A, B;
  • IB Diploma with grade 5 – 7

Living and studying medicine in Kaunas, Lithuania

Once the capital city of Lithuania today Kaunas is the second largest city in the country. Situated some 100 km from the capital Vilnius and 250 km from the Baltic seashores Kaunas is a city full of history. Students who study medicine  in Kaunas can enjoy beautiful landmarks, interesting museums and remarkable cultural heritage. There is a great number of theatres, fine hotels, restaurant, cafes and shopping malls in the city. 

Accommodation

If you are a first-year student you can choose between the university dorms (located on campus), student residence halls in either Kaunas old town or the city centre and renting an apartment on your own. Prices at the LSMU dorms vary between EUR 75 and 200 per month depending on the room type. Beware of the opening and closing dates of application for student housing. The sooner you apply the better the options for accommodation are.

Transport

The buses in Kaunas are either trolley buses or regular buses. The buses cost 0,5 euros for a student. Taxis are a fast and cheap way to move around town, especially when it is dark or rainy. Taxis in Kaunas are cheap when using the Bolt app. If you would like to travel outside Kaunas, you can reach other cities in Lithuania by train or bus. All The trains depart from Kaunas train station (Kauno geležinkelio stotis). Price on tickets vary depending on where you go, but there is a 50% student discount.
