The Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy was established in 1879 and named in honour of the famous Romanian scientist Grigore T. Popa. It is one of the oldest universities in Romania and offers four faculties: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medical Bioengineering.

The university is in Iași, which is one of the largest cities in Romania, located in the North-East part and only 500km from the capital city. The city is spread over seven valleys and is colloquially nicknamed “city of the seven hills”. While not a bustling metropolis it does have a young cosmopolitan spirit due to its almost 50,000 students. Iasi is a cultural hub with its National Theatre and “Luceafarul” Theatre one can expect to be entertained by the best string quartets in Europe the “Voces” Quartet at the G.E Philharmonic. If you’re so inclined, you can even visit the jewel of Iași known as The Palace of Culture. It is home to museums of history, science and art. Close to the Palace you have an extensive “lifestyle centre” which is consists of a shopping mall, food court, event halls and even a multiplex cinema.

The first three years are pre-clinical. They emphasise on the fundamental subjects—for example, Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Biophysics. The last three years are clinical with a focus on surgery and preventative medicine with more of an emphasis on practical work and visiting patients in hospitals and clinics.

There are no graduate-entry programmes at this university, but student transfers are possible.

The university offers dentistry and medicine courses in English. Both are 6 years long. Tuition fees for both medicine and dental medicine are €5000 per year.

There are 200 available seats for medicine and 70 for dentistry.

New disciplines are always updated and added as needed per European standards and West-European educational systems such as Biomaterials and Bioequipments, Implantology, Management and Dental Aesthetics.

Student Accommodation

There are dormitories, but Romanian students are privileged. That’s why renting a flat in the city is a safer bet. You can rent a one-bedroom apartment for as little as €200 per month, and you will have the comfort of privacy.

Living costs in Iasi are €400 per month on average.

In your free time, you can visit many places such as museums, galleries, parks, botanical gardens, shopping malls, theatres, operas, and more.

University Term Dates

The academic year begins on the 30th of September. 1st semester is 14 weeks long and ends on the 17th of January immediately followed by the winter exam session, which is 21 days.

The summer semester begins is 15 weeks long and starts on the 17th of February and ends on the 29th of May. Exam session number 2 is throughout June.

Accreditation

You will get an international degree in medicine when you complete your studies successfully.

The GMC recognises Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine. To be accepted, the GMC’s requirements are: you will need to have graduated successfully in a course which contained at least 5,500 hours and lasted at least three years.
